Everyday we walked home from work. We lived in an industrial area, formerly a military base. There were still no train or bus stops nearby, but a former child star now went to my coffee shop sometimes. Everyday we passed an inlet that was an important shipyard during the Civil War; it built one of the ironclads that was in that big battle back home. These days the inlet just held an old tug boat anchored in the middle. We would watch the setting sun sparkling around it and the skyline visible through a chain link fence and we would say, Can you believe we live here? And we could and we couldn’t, depending on how we felt that day.
