We went to the lake right after I came back from the funeral. I didn’t want to go but you thought it would help to have some time away. We biked 32 kilometers into the countryside, where all the roads were named for flowers. We spread two towels out on the forest floor and laid down under the shade. Trees formed a dense canopy over the curved edge of the lake and dappled sunlight danced along the water’s quiet surface. When we arrived to our cabin, we found a canopy made of mosquito net hanging over our bed. I felt foggy and unfocused, wholly out of time, grief nearly removing the world from me but you tethering me to it. In the evening I laid prone on a lawn chair, happily exhausted from a day of biking and swimming, all the tension gone from my body. Du siehst aus wie ein Schluck Wasser in der Kurve, you said laughing. You look like a sip of water rounding the bend.
